Researching Franchise Opportunities

How to Find the Right Franchise

By LEANNE BEATTIE

Deciding which franchise opportunity is the right fit for you can seem overwhelming. Research is the name of the game in this situation - it's absolutely essential to do your homework before signing on the dotted line.

Naturally, you're excited about the prospects of owning your own business, but always research a franchise thoroughly before you go ahead and make a purchase. Use your head to make the decision, even if your heart is telling you to go for it. It's too easy to make a commitment on a whim, only to realize down the road that you're miserable.

Keep Your Options Open

The secret to franchise research? Keeping your options open. Even if you think you know which company you want to pursue, don't limit yourself. It's a good idea to learn all you can about two or three different franchise opportunities and then compare them head to head. When all is said and done, which one will be the best fit for your talents and experience? Which one can you see yourself running five years down the road? In ten years?

Before you buy, consider several different types of franchises - don't get stuck thinking only fast food franchises or only car repair franchises. By keeping an open mind, you might find the franchise of your dreams is one you never would have considered. Once you have several interesting franchises lined up, cover their names and look at each opportunity with an unbiased eye. Compare each one to your ideal business model - how does each one measure up? Without a well-known name clouding the picture, you're apt to see the opportunity in a brand-new light.

Ask the Hard Questions

An intrinsic part of the research process is asking questions. Talk to as many franchise owners as possible from many different types of businesses before making any sort of commitment. This information will help you discover which type of operation suits your financial needs, your work style, and your skills. Dig deep and discover the not so terrific aspects of each business and make sure that each opportunity is truly what it appears to be before making a final decision.

Getting in touch with franchisees might not be easy at times, but it's a necessary step. While most states require companies to give you a list of franchisees to contact, this list might only include names in your state or area, or only the most successful and oldest franchises in the system. It's your job to weed through the list and find the people who will give you an honest, no-holds-barred view of their business.

Being well informed as you come into the business will dramatically improve your odds of success - and talking to actual franchisees is the best way to learn the nitty gritty details about the company. How effective are the sales strategies? What's an average day like? And when might you realistically expect to break even?

Be Selective

Don't try to rush the research process by considering too many franchises at a time. Be very selective and completely research two or three opportunities before moving on-any more than that will just be confusing. Your research should be extensive and thorough, but this is impossible if you're considering too many businesses all at once. Considering fewer franchises allows you to drill down deeper into the true essence of each one - if you find that a business doesn't meet or exceed your personal and professional guidelines, dump it and move on to the next opportunity.

Repeat as Necessary

Repeat this process as many times as necessary until you find the franchise that best matches your expectations. You'll be investing an enormous amount of money and time in your franchise start-up and much of your future happiness will depend on whether or not your relationship with your franchisor turns out to be everything you expected.

A little knowledge goes a long way, so don't rush the research process - take as much time as you need to learn everything about a business. Remember, your success is on the line here. The franchise business that helps you reach all of your financial and lifestyle goals the fastest is the one you should build your dreams on. And when you've found it, you'll know.
