Franchise Concept: Soft-serve dairy products/sandwiches Dairy Queen
It started out as a simple idea - an ice cream smoothie made just right so that people who liked it would buy it. Little did the founders of Dairy Queen know that their product would propel the entirely new concept of franchising into the spotlight, making it one of the major economic achievements in the history of the United States - and the modern world - today. Like all great entrepreneurial endeavors that change the scope of how business is done, the story of Dairy Queen\'s beginning is a little bit unconventional. In fact, its first sale was only for ten cents, in the form of a spectacular smoothie that the public just couldn\'t resist. It had been developed by a father and son team in Kankakee, Illinois, who were spending their spare time outside of work trying to figure out a recipe for the tastiest of frozen, soft desert treats. In 1938 they got their good friend Sherb Noble to promote their new invention with a special \"all you can eat\" offer to the local townspeople. In a stretch of just two hours, close to 2,000 deserts were sold, foreshadowing the product\'s success for years to come. Yet it wasn\'t just the product that was responsible for its inventors\' and promoters\' success, but rather it was the creation of an entirely novel way of marketing, the fast food chain restaurant with a large franchisee base. Dairy Queen didn\'t start out so large. During the Second World War, in fact, Dairy Queen experienced very little growth. With just about ten stores existed in 1941 that number went up to only 100 by 1947. Yet with the economy starting to really boom, this fast food chain struck the market with phenomenal force. By 1950 there were 1,446 stores and by 1955 the number of Dairy Queen locations rose to 2,600. Now, Dairy Queen boasts almost 6,000 stores within the United States, inside of Canada and in at least 20 different foreign countries. Almost 70 years old, Dairy Queen can arguably call itself one of the largest fast food chains in the world. If a franchisee chooses to go with the Dairy Queen-Brazier restaurant option, he or she will be proud to serve a wide selection of burgers, hot dogs, grilled chicken and salads along with the usual dessert options. For those seeking the mall stand option, the Dairy Queen-Orange Julius stand is a great way to serve customers delicious refreshments while they shop. But no matter which form the franchise investment takes, those who are interested will find that Dairy Queen offers a few different options. Instead of limiting franchisees to multi-unit ownership - although this is definitely an option - entrepreneurs can open up a single store, provided they have sufficient financial resources. In addition, if someone is interested in only investing but not having to manage the store, arrangements be made so that a manager is hired who has a stake in the franchise as well. Lastly, Dairy Queen offers an ownership assistance program for those who are looking to move up from management to ownership. By providing a long list of options, Dairy Queen attracts highly motivated people from a wide variety of backgrounds to experience the joys of ownership and to contribute to the overall success of Dairy Queen. Indeed, a large part of the company\'s success is the high level of dedication and the strong work ethic among its investors and franchisees. Franchise InformationFinancial & Terms
