Franchise Concept: Donuts, coffee Dougnuts and Coffee Since 1937
The story of Krispy Kreme began with a secret; a secret doughnut recipe, in fact, that the original founder Vernon Rudolph bought from a French immigrant chef of New Orleans. Rudolph then set up shop as a wholesale retailer in 1937, and started doing business out of a rented building in Old Salem, North Carolina. Soon, however, passersby who smelled the wonderful cooking from inside couldn\'t resist asking for a doughnut here and there until people started showing up in droves. So, eventually Rudolph cut out a hole from the wall and began selling straight to individual customers. Today, Krispy Kreme boasts a large number of stores across the nation, and has recently begun to expand internationally by opening up its first location in Toronto, Canada. Without stopping there, however, the company plans to expand to other countries as well. For the first couple of decades after Krispy Kreme opened up, there were a handful of stores doing business in the area, nearly all of which were owned by local families. After a while, however, Rudolph realized that it was time to make his baking processes more efficient after finding that the quality of his doughnuts could not be uniformly guaranteed. That\'s why he opened up a plant for mixing the doughnut recipe which he would then distribute to the entire chain of Krispy Kremes. From this point on through the years, the team has consistently focused on improving the process and turning out even better doughnuts in higher volume through an automated baking system. The first big expansion of Krispy Kreme came in the 1960\'s, when the green-colored tile design practically became a trademark image alongside the roadside signs that were well-recognized - and well loved - roadside symbols throughout the southeastern United States after a hiatus in its growth, Krispy Kreme is hitting its second wind, with store locations throughout the nation and Canada as well. In addition, there have been many recent developments of capital such as the hot doughnut machine that has boosted productivity while preserving flavor. The coffee, too, is improved with recent techniques designed to maximize its flavor and effectiveness. Due to its increasing popularity as a franchise option for ambitious entrepreneurs, Krispy Kreme market areas have already been developed the United States, and may be come available for franchising a little later on. For international development the markets in Canada, Mexico, Australia and Western Europe (specifically the United Kingdom) have currently all been spoken for. That said, however, the company is looking for franchise applicants who have an interest in starting a Krispy Kreme location in either Asia or Eastern Europe. There are certain requirements expected of those who wish to pursue this excellent business opportunity. The first involves previous or current experience in owning and running a food service business. Prospective franchisees should be willing to expand upon this experience through the Krispy Kreme commitment. In addition, franchisees are needed to demonstrate enough upfront capital to develop at least ten stores with a net worth of no less than $30 million. That\'s because the current system in place is that of an \"area developer\" strategy. One of the last major requirements for area developers is a good understanding of the local market in which they plan to develop the Krispy Kreme franchise.
