McDonald's Franchising Information

Joining the McDonald's Family

McDonald's has always been a franchise company. If you want to be a part of an American tradition, here are details about becoming a franchisee.

McDonald's seek individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • A strong desire to succeed, work hard and be part of a winning team.
  • The willingness to participate in a comprehensive training program.
  • A willingness to personally devote full-time efforts to the day to day operations of the McDonald's restaurant.
  • A strong and successful background with emphasis on interpersonal skills and financial management.
  • Approximately $175,000 of non-borrowed personal resources.
  • High personal integrity
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and strong desire to succeed
  • A proven ability to motivate and train people
  • The ability to manage finances
  • A willingness to complete a comprehensive training program and become proficient in all aspects of operating a McDonald's restaurant business.
  • Financial resources

Cost of a McDonald's Franchise

Typically, a new McDonald's restaurant ranges from $466,000 -955,500 USD. The size of the restaurant facility, area of the country, pre-opening expenses, inventory, kitchen equipment, signage, and style of decor and landscaping will affect new restaurant costs. These costs are paid to suppliers. In addition, at the time of opening, an initial fee of $45,000 USD is paid to McDonald's Corporation for all new restaurants. The initial cash investment is a minimum of $175,000 for a conventional purchase or $100,000 for a Business Facilities Lease. McDonald's does not offer any financing to franchisees, nor does it franchise to partners or investors. To you this means that you cannot borrow money from relatives, friends or associates for the franchising fee, as this would enter you into a partnership with your lender. McDonald's requires franchisees to devote their full time efforts to their business and divest themselves from other business interests.

Speculative Earnings

Profitability varies depending upon a number of factors, including sales, location, occupancy and operating costs and the ability of the franchisee to manage and control the business. Questions related to profit and loss are discussed during a later stage of the selection process.

Site Selection

McDonald's develops a franchise location because they think it will be successful without regard to who the franchisee may be for that specific location. McDonald's does all of the site evaluation and selects the location. McDonald's acquires the property, improve the site and construct the building. The franchisee is responsible for equipping the facility with all necessary items of kitchen equipment, seating and decor, signs and landscaping, etc. As sites are developed, we offer them to candidates who have already completed training and are approved to become owner-operators.

As a McDonald's franchisee you will receive:

  • Personal satisfaction both as an owner/operator and as a member of McDonald's worldwide organization.
  • Personal growth and business knowledge from McDonald's extensive training.
