Why Veterans Make Great Fast Food Franchise Entrepreneurs

If you want to invest in a post-military career running a fast food franchise, the U.S. government has a program to help - and you already have many translatable skills.

Want to be your own boss, but with a little help? Opening a fast food franchise when you leave the service might be the opportunity you are looking for. You will be your own boss, but you will also have the experience and resources of the chain you decide to join. Talk about the best of both worlds! Here is what you need to know to get started:

Your experience in the service translates into fast food franchising well. You know how the chain of command works, you know how to manage people, and you know how to take care of important details. All of these skills will help you to run the franchise of your choice. You'll get help with the business and marketing end of things from the franchise.

Franchising Helps Veterans Get a Business Off the Ground

Depending on which franchise you choose, you will be supplied with the majority of the elements you'll need to run the business. Franchises provide budgets and help with financial planning. The marketing and advertising are taken care of by the franchise, as is the design of the workplace. You will have to pay a franchising fee for these services and your affiliation with the company, but this is a great investment.

There is a special program designed to help veterans start a franchise--fast food or otherwise--and you should take advantage of it. Called the VetFran, short for Veterans Transition Franchise Initiative, it is designed to help veterans from the current Iraq War, as well (as those still active in business from the Gulf War, Vietnam and Korea) open their own franchises. Over 200 franchises participate in this program with the goal of reducing the barriers to owning a franchise for veterans. Many companies work with veterans to lower the initial cost of the down payment while also helping to provide reasonable small business loans.

Veteran-Friendly Fast Food Franchising

A great example of a franchise currently working with veterans is Little Caesars Pizza. This company offers qualified veterans a $68,000 benefit, including a $20,000 credit off the franchise fee for your first store as well as a $10,000 equipment credit. Little Caesars is also willing to provide financing help and give a $18,000 marketing credit to qualified veterans. In fact, veterans can find a fast food franchise option to fit nearly every taste:

  • Bakery-style fast food companies who participate in this program include Cinnabon International, Inc. and Dunkin' Donuts. Other sweet treat franchises include Baskin-Robbins, and Maggie Moo's Ice Cream.
  • For the sandwich shop oriented, VetFran can help you get into a Pita Pit or a New York NY Fresh Deli.
  • Prefer to run a restaurant? Figaro's, the HoneyBaked Ham Company and Café, Papa Gino's, or Salad Creations give Vets help with eat-in style franchises.
  • Is coffee your cup of tea? Your VetFran friendly opportunities include The Coffee Beanery, Daily Grind Unwind, and Dunn Bros. Coffee.

Your skills from the service, help from the VetFran initiative, and one of the many companies willing to work with veterans--together, these three provide the ingredients for a successful post-military career.
