Four Traits of a Successful Veteran Franchisee

Most successful franchisees share four personality traits. Do you have the right personality for franchising success?

People of all ages, races, cultures, and backgrounds have experienced great success with their franchise businesses. This diverse group does have four things in common--personality traits that predispose them to success as franchisees. Before you commit your time and savings to your franchise business, you should assess whether you share these traits of a successful franchisee.

Carefulness

Franchisees who consider carefully before they make big decisions tend to fare better than those who are led by their passions and instincts. Your first decision when you become a franchisee is also the biggest: which type of business to purchase. How well or poorly you pick your franchise can shape your business's destiny. In order to make a good decision you must be patient enough to carefully research your options. If you do not do research before starting your business you could find that your franchisor is not as helpful as you originally thought--or that your idea to start a coffee shop franchise in an area that already has one on each corner was a poor one.

Once you have made this all-important initial decision, you can switch gears, turning your carefulness into a meticulous eye for detail. This is an area in which your military training comes in handy. The precision that you brought to your tasks as a soldier can give you a huge advantage in the business world as you calculate budgets, handle marketing and advertising, and manage your staff.

Commitment

Franchising can be difficult, tiring work, and it might take several years before you begin to see financial rewards. Therefore, it is essential that you feel passionate and committed to the business you have selected. One way to ensure that this happens is to pick a business that truly interests you. Maybe you have a hobby that you have always wished you could spend more time doing; for example, you love to cook and always dreamed of owning a restaurant. Now is your chance. If you have only limited exposure to the type of business you are considering purchasing, think about spending a few months working as an employee in that business. This will give you an excellent sense of your day-to-day tasks if you choose to open a franchise.

Motivation

Franchisees must find ways to keep themselves motivated, content, and productive. Though franchisors do oversee the business to varying degrees, in general you are on your own. If you do not feel like going in to work one morning or writing out work schedules for the following week, there is no one immediately overseeing you who can restore your lost focus. In addition to leading their staffs, franchisees must serve as their own motivators.

Risk-Taking

Finally, franchisees must be willing to take risks. Franchises tend to be less chancy than other businesses because they come with business plans that have been proven to work. When you open any new business, however, you risk the money that you invested in it. Is this money that you can afford to lose, or would losing the money mean that you could not make your mortgage payments? Consider what might happen if your business does fail. How would your lifestyle change, and could you live with these changes?

If you have the right personality traits for it, nothing is more fulfilling than launching a successful franchise. If you're lacking in one of these four traits, by focusing your energy on being more careful, feeling committed and motivated, or reconciling yourself to potential risks, you can mold yourself into the perfect franchisee.
